Marc Marquez Ego Trip

I think I said that last year and get lots of doubtful looks for it- I said that if Marquez would have to deal with a Casey Stoner- or an motivated Lorenzo- or Rossi back in form… he would never have been a world champion. But don’t get me wrong… I like his aggressive- up to arrogant riding style, but he has kinda the same easy to calculate weak spot which also Max Biaggi had… his ego runs him in trouble.

Simple said… if you show him your front wheel during braking travel- Marc would let go off the brake. It’s easy to figure him out for highly experienced guys like Rossi and Lorenzo who learned to control their temper. And it will become worse, when his temper runs him in total madness, which can be the beginning of the end in terms of injuries and motivation.

Of course it’s not the front wheel. In Mugello, Marc was on a permanent fighting line- where there was no sense for fighting lines. Instead of setting up the Ducati in front of him for a clean pass on the brakes- he went off the line in the left turn to eventually pass on the flick into the right. This made him going a tighter line into the right. The second mistake was that he  miss judged the speed for that particular line because he still tried to attack the Duc. Totally senseless loss of points.

Long way to go, and when competition bites back you gotta be smarter then that. A championship isn’t won in the first three laps of a single race. This is consistency, calculated risks, strategic thinking and learning- not overdoing. If he keeps this attitude up- he ends up where Pedrosa is today.

  • Nice read Coach...and I agree. Just watching him the last few years it's apparent that if you attack him early and stay on him, he tends to "melt". Good example was the 3rd race of this year when Rossi passed him then he tried right away to get him back. Knowing he was on worse tires, he should have just waited then attacked but he got and "excited" and tagged Rossi twice, the second time causing his crash...

    • oh remember... we had this discussion about strategy and Casey back in 2014? If he would be there back then... Marc would have been shaved and polished to a shiny diamond- in fact he get this done now, but the danger is that he does not see that because he's blindfolded by his champ belt.
      Does that make sense?

  • Wow... Your conjecture is amazing. His ego? Marc is great for the sport because he puts on a show. You can keep your lorenzo snooze fest. Like simoncelli, marquez is great. If he sees an opening he takes it. Just like Rossi. Look at laguna in 2008. Rossi knew he didn't have the pace so he TOOK the lead. For our sport this is a great thing because the average person doesn't tune in to watch someone set lap times. If we liked that... we could just watch F1. We watch for the battles. Last years Mugello race was a perfect example. Give me 6 Marc's any day, with a rossi and simoncelli. You can keep your lorenzo, stoner and pedrosa snooze fests.

    • sounds like you feel offended.
anyways, it seems you totally misunderstand what i try to say here. i am actually not a pedrosa fan- especially not a rossi fan- and i actually said that i like marc's agressive style. what i am saying is that he never claimed a champ titel that early and dominant if he would have competition- and that his ego does not allow him to go for results. just take off the blindfold called 'fan loyalty' for a moment and you'll see. However, I didn't meant to offend anyone Josh.

  • Josh...slow down. Remember, Coach Can's observations are coming ftom a unique oerspective...he was once a race himself. I'm no professional racer but I share Can's point of view. By no means do I not like Marquez, on the contrary, I love watching him ride. However, he's young and if you look at his history, it coincides with what Can's opinion, and m8ne as well, of Marquez. Look at the troubles he's having this year and please don't say "it's the bike"...

  • I think what happened with MM at the Barcelona GP supports my theory very well, doesn't it?!
